After the rain

I feel like I've been playing the waiting game this past couple of weeks. Waiting for the rain to stop, waiting for the inevitable power outage, waiting for the power to come back on, waiting for the cable, the internet etc... things that feel so normal to have everyday but mean so little in the face of a life-threatening storm. Apart from moving things out of our basement in the middle of the night (and despite a back up sump pump, we still got a foot of water down there), most of my night was spent trying to reassure my 5 year old that things will be back to normal and figuring out the safest and most comfortable way to get everyone to sleep.

Target Fall Beauty Bag

If you requested for the Target Fall Beauty Bag on Facebook a few weeks back, I think many were delivered last week. I got mine yesterday.

CoverGirl LashBlast Clump Crusher Mascara in 800 Very Black

There's been a lot of buzz over CoverGirl's newest mascara from the lashblast line. The Clump Crusher promises 200 percent more volume and you guessed it, absolutely no clumps. Allure magazine hailed it as one of the big beauty breakthroughs for 2012. I couldn't wait to get myself a tube.

Admittedly, the CVS and Target stores in my area are usually slow in getting new products in. Walgreens and Walmart seem to get them first so I tried the nearest 24 hour Walmart to search for this treasure. After going down the aisle and looking through the CoverGirl products, I chanced upon one tube of Clump Crusher. Thankfully, there was a sales associate on the same aisle and she knew exactly what I was talking about when I asked if they had more.

Nuance by Salma Hayek Mineral Eyeshadow Duo in Midnight Blue and Silver Steel

On one trip to CVS, I was given this sample card of the Nuance by Salma Hayek Mineral Eyeshadow Duo in Midnight Blue and Silver Steel. On one side of the card is a coupon for the product.

Yes to Baby Carrots Face + Nose Wipes

When the Yes to (fill in with vegetable) brand came about a few years ago, I didn't think that it was going to take off. But when some of their items started to go on clearance at my local Target, I found myself grabbing a few lip balms. I gave one to my friend, who liked it. I kept one for myself. I also received a few samples of the Yes to Cucumbers Facial Towelettes. I thought that the brand had promise.

Conair Infiniti Pro AC Motor Hair Dryer and Travel Dryer

After 14 years of service, my hair dryer finally went kaput. I was so unimpressed by its demise (something went pop and then it died) that I hastily tossed it into the nearest bin which promptly got collected, never to be seen again. This left me without a reference point to purchase a new hair dryer. I remember that I bought it at a drugstore but a trip to CVS and Walgreens did not yield anything. What I've learned at this point is that if you're fortunate enough to have your hair dryer reach its twilight teens, when the time comes to replace it, the model will be extinct.

Allure magazine's Best of Beauty lists the Solano Turbo 3300 Xtralite Dryer as its top pick. The day I develop the patience and the skill to give myself blowouts, I might be persuaded to get it. At this point, it wouldn't be worth the investment.

InStyle magazine gave me two options in their Best Beauty Buys list: the Solano Original Supersolano if I wanted to spend over a hundred bucks or their more budget-friendly pick, the Conair Infiniti Pro AC Motor, a bright orange machine that promises three temperature settings, a cooling button and two attachments. It's supposed to be quiet too, so let's go find it!

Finding the Conair hair dryer above was easy. Everyone seems to carry it. I even found it on Amazon. On the same page was an apple green travel model. I couldn't really tell the difference between the two, apart from the price and the folding handle on the apple green one so I sent my husband out to Target to buy them both for me. My initial assessment had me preferring the apple green over the orange for a number of reasons.

L'Oreal Colour Riche Nail Color in 203 Till The Sun Comes Up

I decided that my nails were getting a bit too long so I gave them a good trim. Of course, right after I do this, I end up at Target and find this marked down.

Don't get me wrong. I'm happy. The item, marked down to $3.48 from $4.99, subtract a $1 coupon and two 5% discounts and I ended up paying about $2.37 for the bottle, tax included. This is the third shade from the New York Nudes collection, from which I already got 201 Park Ave Luncheon and 202 Broadway Boogie.

Going Gaga Over Guerlain

The Guerlain Liu Collection for the 2012 holidays has been popping up at counters everywhere. I made my selections two weeks ago and picked two items to take home.

Les Ombres Turandot
Perles Du Dragon

Along with these two items, I purchased the new Parure de Lumière foundation (love it!) and Les Voilettes Mineral Powder.

For Trend Show, Nordstrom is offering a gift with purchase (must meet minimum) consisting of a small zip bag containing samples of the Météorites Perles Primer, Noir G mascara, Shine Automatique lipstick in Extrait De Rose and the Secret de Pureté Cleansing Milk. I'm very excited to integrate these new items into my makeup routine. Reviews and more pictures are forthcoming.

UPDATE 10/31/12: Nordstrom currently has an online offer that includes deluxe samples of the Super Aqua-Lotion, Super Aqua-Serum, Secret de Pureté Cleansing Milk, L'Or Primer and a 0.03 oz. Shalimar Parfum Initial Eau de Parfum, all in a pink pouch, with a $150 Guerlain beauty purchase.

L'Oreal Colour Riche Nail Color in 380 Butterfly Kisses

Will you look at this rain? I feel like it hasn't stopped since I got up this morning. I am really hoping to see the sun so I can take some lovely pictures for you. In the meantime, how about a little spring color for a pick me up. L'Oreal's Butterfly Kisses just might work.

L'Oreal Colour Riche Nail Color in 380 Butterfly Kisses

I purchased this right around the time the first four collections launched. Initially, I got Now You Sea Me from the Iconic Muse collection. Then I went back for a look at the light and pretty colors that they lumped together as the Hopeless Romantic collection. I got this one together with Pink Me Up which I reviewed in May.

Laura Mercier Crème Lip Colour in Caramel and Tea Rose

Laura Mercier has recently come out with a new lipstick line, the Crème Smooth Lip Colour, and having tried it at the store, I was met with disappointment. It was a thick formula that seemed to have that effect of sitting on top of my lips and not looking quite right. Perhaps I've gotten used to the sheerer formulas that have come out lately and it was better applied in thinner layers with a lip brush. But as I didn't care much for the boxy packaging that reminded me of Burberry's lipsticks, I couldn't be bothered with experimenting.

I like the old Laura Mercier lipsticks. I thought I'd show you a couple of colors that I never had a chance to feature before.

L'Oreal True Match Super-Blendable Blush

Time to play catch up! I've had this post on the backburner for months now. Having recently added two more colors to my collection, I thought it was high time for a feature.

I wore the L'Oreal True Match Super-Blendable Blush in Baby Blossom for my wedding. True! And I used Bare Honey to contour. I've gotten a lot more extravagant in my makeup choices since then but there's really no reason you can't walk into a drugstore and come out with products worthy of that special day.

Of the compacts you see in the pictures, the two larger ones are the regular-sized True Match Blendable Blushes and the two smaller ones are sample size compacts that I got with the purchase of the foundation powder from the same line.

Revlon Foundation and Powder Brushes

Revlon makes brushes. Although I've known this for some time, it seems I never notice them when I'm out shopping. For one thing, the Target stores I go to don't carry them and that's where I buy the majority of the Revlon makeup that I own. I saw them at a couple of other stores (a CVS and Walmart, I think) and finally decided to grab a pair at Ulta. Even then, I had a difficult time looking for the display. They weren't with the Revlon products but with some other makeup brushes that the store carried (EcoTools, Japonesque etc.).

Simple Moisturizing Facial Wash

I thought about doing this review today because I saw that Target's website had a $1 off coupon with purchase of two facial care items (good on Pond's, Simple and St. Ives products only) and I'm pretty sure I got a manufacturer coupon in the mail somewhere. Remember that Target will honor one manufacturer and one Target coupon for the same product so if you have one of each, this will save you a fair bit.

The Simple Moisturizing Facial Wash is what I have in the shower right now. I'd been using it for weeks and I like it.

The product comes in a 5 fl. oz. tube. The instructions tell you to squeeze a small amount into your hands and to work it into a lather. This is a necessary step as when it comes out, you get a really thick, translucent gel that won't dissolve. It kind of just sits there until you rub it enough to produce a light foam. Once over that initial unmelting stage, it lathers nicely and you can massage it into the skin. It can be rinsed out easily enough and doesn't leave an annoying film like a lot of "moisturizing" cleansers do. Just clean and not drying.

A Look Back at the Customizable Palette

I'd been cleaning up my makeup drawers and found a bunch of palettes that I no longer use. Periodically, I give out my less-used makeup to my best friends or my sisters in an effort to clear out my drawers. However, I tend to limit the giveaways to powder products. I want to be sure everyone is safe so I just throw away makeup that I think is too old to safely use, especially if they're cream products. In the past, I've taken to removing pans from their compacts and depotting eyeshadows or I would buy refill pans from certain brands and buy customizable palettes for them later on. One of the more popular fully-customizable palettes I've seen is the UNII palette.

The palette comes in different colors and with it you get a removable thumbgrip and a sheet magnet to use on the items that you would like to stick into the palette. The newer UNII palettes may be slightly different. Mine is shown below. I decided not to cut up the sheet and instead laid it on the bottom of the palette to keep it clean and I stuck my pans on to that instead.

BECCA Fine Loose Finishing Powder in Sesame

I'm always on the lookout for a really good yellow-based finishing powder and I'd heard that BECCA makes some excellent loose powder in a wide variety of shades so I decided to try the Fine Loose Finishing Powder in Sesame.

BECCA Lip & Cheek Crème in Blossom

I've noticed that Sephora has resumed carrying BECCA products. Right now, there are less than 20 products available online but it looks like they add more items periodically so some of the key products from the brand should soon be available.

I purchased the few BECCA items that I have from a Duane Reade in Manhattan. I wasn't very familiar with BECCA so I started with some basics that I'd heard good things about. If you recall, I featured the Mineral Blush in Damselfly earlier this year. Sephora has that in stock. I also mentioned the Compact Concealer in one of my concealer features. However, I did not find my shade (Banana) in Sephora's listing.

In this post, I have the BECCA Lip & Cheek Crème. It's a travel-friendly dual-purpose product housed in a compact with a mirror. It looks much like a lot of BECCA products (the so-called flying saucer packaging) and seems sturdy. I picked a very subtle shade, Blossom, described as a caramel nude. I imagine that it's designed to be applied with fingers. Having no need for an applicator would certainly make it handy to carry around. I try to use a brush whenever I can but I think this one truly blends better when applied with the fingertips.

Revlon ColorStay Whipped Crème Makeup

I spied this new foundation from Revlon a few months back at a local CVS. I walked in there hoping to pick up some of the lip stains but they had run out of the colors I wanted so I settled for this instead. How I go from attempting to buy lipstick to getting a jar of foundation is beyond me but I did it anyway :)

Figuring out the proper shade for me was pure guesswork so I had to ask at the register regarding the return policy and was assured that if I didn't like the product, I had 60 days in which to return it. Armed with this confidence, I went home with shade 220 Nude.

L'Oreal Colour Riche Nail Color in 116 Brit Invasion

I know I said that I thought I had enough violets in my nail polish collection but I couldn't resist! Once upon a time, wearing purple glitter polish seemed adventurous for me but obviously, it's become quite a favorite. And as far as favorites go, I think Brit Invasion may be my favorite violet yet.

Brit Invasion in the sun

A violet base speckled with good old gold makes for an eye-catching dark neutral that's perfect for fall. This applies well and didn't stain my nails although it took some extra effort to get the glitters off completely. All told, it's a lovely color. I wish I'd gotten it sooner.

RImmel Natural Bronzer in 021 Sun Light

I wear bronzer all year long. I like the warmth that it adds to the face. I swear by Guerlain's Terracotta bronzers but they really do cost a pretty penny. If you're in a crunch, may I offer a less expensive alternative that you should easily be able to find at your nearest Target store: the Rimmel Natural Bronzer. Mine comes in 021 Sun Light.

Cargo Essential Palette (for eyes) - Cool Neutral and Dark Neutral

Ulta occasionally has these deals on the prestige brands that they carry. I've picked up the Tarte Park Avenue Princess Bronzer on one such occasion. A couple of weeks ago, I tweeted about the Cargo Essential Palettes which were half off at Ulta. They had the palettes in the store and online. I got two of them, one intentionally and the other quite by mistake.

So first things first, what is the essential palette? It's an eyeshadow palette with four shades. When you open the compact, you'll see the instructions for creating an eye look with the four colors in the palette. There is a large mirror which I love using so I appreciate that this palette has it.
